What No One Tells You About the Space In-Between heavy drinking and complete abstinence (the gray area).

I want to share my story from the perspective of someone who’s been through it.

For years I drank more and more, and more often than I wanted. I would vow to stop — a few weeks here, a month there — and sometimes I did. But the breaks never stuck. I never had a dramatic rock bottom, and thankfully nothing catastrophic ever happened. On paper my life looked good: a loving family, a satisfying career. Inside, though, I felt restless and ashamed. I didn’t call myself an “alcoholic,” but privately I wondered whether that label might fit.

What about you?

  1. Do you feel fine skipping alcohol during the week but struggle to stop once the weekend comes?

  2. Have you noticed your tolerance increasing without meaning for it to?

  3. Do you ever feel like alcohol takes more than it gives, but you’re not sure how to change?

  4. Have you caught yourself thinking about drinking more often than you’d like?

  5. Do you feel conflicted — wanting to cut back but also not wanting to give it up?
